One of the greatest influences a person can have in this world is to influence a child

There were so many moments through out the 183rd Semiannual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints , where I felt the Lord speaking directly to me, It is powerful and oh so intimidating, but also awakening to the realization that there is much room for me to grow and that my Heavenly Father loves me enough, to sent guidance my way. One of the talks the touch my heart in so many levels, was the talk by Sister Rosemary M. Wixom, general Primary president. She opened up her talk saying,
"One of the greatest influences a person can have in this world is to influence a child,".
I knew it was going to be an amazing talk, immediately my soul was moved by what followed, the story of a little boy who was hiding from his mother in a fabric store. Little by little the mom's concern grew as the minutes went by, She started calling out for her boy louder and louder, repeating his name over and over again. By now people in the store were also looking for the little boy.
One of the store's Clerks prayed and felt that Conner was probably to scare to respond, along with another women, they started walking between the fabric tables and in a soft and loving voice started saying, "Conner if you can hear my voice, say, Here I am," Conner came out from were he was hiding. She went on to say,
"We can learn from that voice from heaven. It not loud, scolding or demeaning; it was a still voice of perfect mildness, giving firm direction while giving hope."
I am not proud to say, but I have become a bit of a screamer, when I want things to get done around the house. I find myself, correcting myself time and time again. I find myself telling my children that there are better ways to cope with situations then to scream our desires or differences. I find myself reminding myself and my children. That the spirit goes away anytime we scream.
I find My self telling them that we should follow our prophets council to not Scream unless there is a fire in the House.
Lets just say I am not one bit proud of this trait that has become a character little by little in my life.
People tell me all the time, "You are so patient Dennissa, I admire this so much of you". Don't get me wrong, I am very patient with my children, I will explain things to them. I will talk about different topics whenever they need my attention. I take great pride in loving and caring for them. I acknowledge the great responsibility God has entrusted in me to raise this 5 kids in partnership with him. and I am more then humbled. But I don't feel I live up to my full potential when I lose my patience and choose to scream to fix any problem, no matter how big or small the problem may be.

Another part of the Talk that also resonated more then ever with me, since I am very involve with the Social Media world, was Sister Wixon's advice to
"disconnect from technology and reconnect with each other."

With Technology just at our finger tips, it is so easy for us to get distracted from all that truly matters in this world, the moments shared with our children, their questions and day events. In our home I have found that setting a schedule when it comes to blogging or networking in social media sites keeps me grounded and limits my overuse of technology.

Sister Wixon's talk finishes up, by remind us that we are our children's biggest influence, that we have the power to influence and shape their life in a most amazing way. "May the words we speak and write to our children reflect the love our Heavenly Father has for His son, Jesus Christ, and for us. And then may we pause to listen, for a child is most capable of speaking great and marvelous things in return."

What is Real Beauty?

A couple of weeks back I was honored to attend A Celebration of Real Beauty Conference, I was extra excited because I would be sharing this event with my two daughters. I always find it extra exciting to tag them along whenever I go to an uplifting event.
I was really not sure as to what I would be expecting from the conference, I knew it had an amazing line up of Motivational Speakers, Strong Women and Entrepreneurs who I admire; But the experience was not only a reaffirmation of what Real Beauty is but also of what I wanted to be able to share with my daughters.
Its been a year in a half of not coloring my hair, which has become such a freedom in my life, My hair looks healthier then ever and I don't really mind all the greys coming in. at times I pluck them out but for the most part I embrace them, because they are who I am.
When it comes to make up Its become my Motto to say that
"Make up is merely a compliment to my Real Beauty".
I no longer want big boobs I'm happy the way I am for the first time in 30 something years of life.
A couple of Weeks back, while having Lunch with two amazing Women in my life. We talked about this very topic, I share my experience of growing up thinking the cheerleaders at school defined Beautiful and since I did not look like them I did not feel beautiful myself. I told them that many years later while looking at the Year Book, I came across my picture and saw myself through my grownup eyes, I Was Beautiful.
My friend shared how we are always talking down on ourselves, Saying how I don't like this about me and I don't like that about me. I wish I could change this, She asked what are we showing our daughters. Which brought up a very interesting point. WHAT are we Really telling our daughters, we do not like the person in the mirror, Will they take this as a example and start a chain of negativity towards themselves?
Beauty has truly become in my eyes a reflection of everything we are, the way we own ourselves. The confidence we share, the way we interact with others. The way we nurture our children and teach them to also love themselves. I know so many beautiful women who will not step out of their house unless they have make up on. or their hair done. I know so many women who compare themselves to the reality star on TV or the model in the Cover Magazine.
WE are what we Believe We are, a true definition of Beauty!!! One of God's greatest Creations.
